In August 2022, I undertook an enriching four week artist’s residency, in the tiny commune of Saint Valière, in the Occitanie region of southern France. Whilst there, I experimented with silver, brass and copper smithing to produce a series of ‘cutlery’. The artist statement and work titles are below:

At the dinner table, we are armed. Forks, knives, teeth and stories.
We are vulnerable in our state of consumption and the sharing of food and conversation. My time at Sainte Valière has been full of divine food, devoured with hands, with teeth and with tools. At dinners we have been vulnerable with our stories and opinions and conversations, all while our fellow eaters are armed with prongs and daggers. These objects are an ode to the ordinary tools of the everyday, and the stories that go with them. It is an experimentation of materials and techniques, but also in transforming usually practical objects, into something ergonomically useless, that instead serve as a conversation starter for the dinner table.
