Podlettes #1, #2 and #3 were created as a series for a group exhibition ‘Head Seed’ at Studio 551 in Newtown in September 2024.
Inspired by natural pod and seeds, it aims to juxtapose organic forms with the severity of metal. Copper was the primary material used, which over time, naturally oxidises, mimicking the disintegration of natural forms. I enjoy working with base metals as they’re a very forgiving material, with the flexibility to reheat and reform many times over and in this particular work, I enjoyed bringing out the organic feel of a material that is usually rigid. Pods, seeds and cocoons are a regular motif in my artworks; I enjoy the irony of presenting natural forms that are only temporarily protective and eventually break down in their natural environment (pods, cocoons), in a material that is typically strong, rigid and somewhat impenetrable.
