This work, made from hammered copper wire with sterling silver rivets, was inspired by the wire work of Alexander Calder, but stemmed from reading about the tradition of hair combs in Chinese culture. One story stuck with me, about how if couples were separated for lengthy periods of time, they would split the wedding hair comb taking half each. Once reunited years later, it was a token of identity and symbol of reunion. The work is also a reflection of the nature of human entanglements and relationships; how we can exist separately but together, and how as humans we will always imbue meaning into inanimate objects. This is another work in which I’ve played with the concept of joining objects together that aren’t normally connected, creating a human-like quality.
This work was created and sold at the Off Stage exhibition at Alpha House in May 2024.
